Propolis is bee product, which gained great popularity during last thirty years in many countries, in medical circles as well as in public. Clinical-experimental examinations proved complex pharmacobiological composition of propolis. Presented reports and discussions at International symposiums on api-therapy in Moscow (1971), Madrid (1974), Grenoble (1975), Krakow (1985), and Nagoya (1986) conveyed that propolis is the most effective known natural antibiotic.
Our research work was directed to two directions. In the first part, the aim of our research included examination of tolerability, and in that scope, tests of dermal toxicity and examination of irritate properties were carried out, as well as determination of the spectrum of antimicrobial effect of propolis built-in the preparation which would be applied for healing of wounds, burns, and inflammatory changes on skin. Examination of reparative effect of propolis on destructive changes on skin caused by chemical agent and UV radiation was also carried out.
Examination of dermal toxicity confirmed that examined preparation was not toxic. Absence of irritate properties confirmed value of CPI < 0.5 according to Draize's scale. The test itself showed significant degree of epitelization of scarified skin in rabbits. Antimicrobial activity of propolis confirmed emphasized bactericidal effect in regard to fungicidal activity. After exposing of skin to certain irritating agents, signs of inflammation and destruction disappeared.
Examined preparation on the basis of propolis showed itself to be non-toxic and non-irritate with an emphasised bactericidal effect.
