In course of phytochemical study of the genus Centaurea we investigated extract of the aerial parts of Centaurea affinis Friv. which has not been examined before. Plant material for this investigation was collected at Vlasina (East Serbia) in September 1998. The air-dried aerial parts were cut into small pieces and extracted with petrol ether-diethyl ether-methanol (1:1:1) for 72h at room temperature. The concentrated extract was subjected to silica gel column chromatography, starting elution with petrol ether and gradually increasing polarity of the solvent by addition of Et2O. After additional purification using preparative TLC, two flavones (apigenin and salvigenin) and two lignans (matairesinol and arktigenin) were isolated. Their structures were confirmed by means of 1H NMR, UV/Vis, IR and MS. This is a first report on presence of these compounds in C. affinis.
